Agriculture Jobs in Canada- Farm Workers

Have you considered a career in agriculture? Probably not, and you probably aren’t even sure where you would start to look for a job in agriculture. When you think agriculture you likely picture tractors, animals, fields as far as the eye can see and long hours for not a lot of money.

But this is an incorrect and outdated picture of what a career in agriculture looks like. This unfortunately leads many to miss out on a massive opportunity.

Numbers Don’t Lie
Some one in eight jobs in Canada are in agriculture, employing over 2.3 million people. These are not just jobs on the farm; these are IT jobs, marketing jobs, research jobs, sales jobs, mechanical and engineering jobs, accounting jobs and so much more.

And the opportunities are going to get even better! The Canadian agriculture sector has a labour shortage of 59,200 workers and this supposed to double by 2025.

There is an unquestionable need for the industry to grow to help feed growing global populations. This fact, coupled with the declining work force due to a rising number of retirements and not enough young farmers to take their place means that businesses all over the country are desperate for skilled and hardworking talent.

Why Work In Agriculture
So, we have established that the opportunity is there and literally begging for you to grab it. But why should you be interested in working in agriculture? The list is long but let’s go over a few of the highlights.

1. Make a Global Impact
Few (if any) industries in the world have a larger impact on people and the planet then agriculture. Working in the industry puts you on the front lines of feeding, clothing and fuelling the world.

2. Agriculture Lifestyle
If you love a desk life there are countless jobs for you in agriculture, but if working in the outdoors, with machinery and animals sounds like a lifestyle you could get used to then look no further. From water skiing in the summer to snowmobiling in the winter your work-life balance won’t get any better.

3. Competitive Salaries
Careers across the agricultural sectors offer competitive salaries in relation to other industries meaning you can have a great lifestyle while still earning a great salary.

4. The Perks
Many businesses in agriculture offer the benefits all of the top tech start-ups do as well. You like free meals? What about a company paid vehicle or included accommodation? All these and much more are available for you.

Moving to Canada?
Hopefully by now you are excited to see the opportunities for you in Canadian agriculture. But maybe you live in another part of the world but want to come and work in Canada. Luckily the Canadian government has made it easier for people with various skill-sets to come and get a work visa or stay permanently in Canada.

There are many programs for you to choose from. International Experience Canada (IEC) is dedicated to people who want to live in Canada for a year or two (this is dependent on the country you are from originally), through special Global Talent Stream programs dedicated to IT professionals in all industries including agriculture, to Provincial Nominee Programs leading to Permanent Status.

More than that, based on your professional education, experience in Canada or overseas and your English or French language skills you can apply through the Express Entry intake system for a Canadian Permanent Residency with one of the programs, such as: Federal Skilled Workers Class (FSWC), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), or Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC).
